Artists: Herwig Gradischnig (ts), Matthias Pichler (b), Klemens Marktl (dr)
Herwig Gradischnig counts as one of the most outstanding components in the enormously subversive Vienna jazz scene. One critic wrote: “ … his full and emphatic sound leaves no doubt about his determination. Profoundly serene and stylistically confident, he captivates with agility and grit. He appears most comfortable where tradition and modernity overlap and the music becomes timeless.”
He has been awarded the Hans-Koller Jazz Prize twice: in 1998, as “Newcomer of the Year”, and in 2003, together with the pianist Oliver Kent for the “Jazz CD of the Year”.
He has been performing with the Vienna Art Orchestra since 1993 and has recorded numerous CDs as well as toured extensively with them.
After spending several years in France, he has returned to Vienna and is presenting his latest project “Herwig Gradischnig’s Ghost Trio”, inspired by Samuel Beckett’s play by the same name. The album’s music springs from the pen of the band leader, and also includes compositions from Klemens Marktl as well as two jazz standards.
Technical finesse and much feeling for improvisation connect him to the congenial partners of his newly founded trio. Thus emerges an acoustic, rich in shades and hues, hard swinging, free and interactive, straight ahead jazz record.
